Kanter to be Sworn in as Under Secretary of Education

  

Martha J. Kanter will be sworn in July 1 as United States under secretary of education in Washington, D.C. Her nomination by President Barack Obama was confirmed June 19 by voice vote of the U.S. Senate following approval by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

As under secretary, Kanter will report to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and oversee policies, programs, and activities related to postsecondary education, vocational and adult education, and federal student aid. The focus of the national education agenda will be to increase student achievement in K-12 and higher education to meet President Obama's goal of having the best educated, most competitive workforce in the world.

In her closing days as chancellor of Foothill-De Anza Community College District, Kanter will attend commencement ceremonies at Foothill College on June 26 and De Anza College on June 27, where she will extend well-deserved congratulations to graduates and their families.
